From Script to Story Board (Masterclass)

Join Cartoon Saloon’s Oscar®-nominated director Nora Twomey and Head of Story/Animation Director Giovanna Ferrari for an in depth demonstration of how they adapt the written word into visual language. Drawing from their previous work together including The Breadwinner and My Father’s Dragon, they will break down their development of a storyboard from script stage, giving a glimpse into the creative processes they use.

    Giovanna Ferrari

    Since the early 2000s, Giovanna has worked on several feature films across Europe both as Storyboard Artist and Animator. She has worked with Cartoon Saloon in Ireland on a number of award-winning projects, including Song of The Sea, The Breadwinner and Wolfwalkers. Giovanna herself received an Emile Award in 2018 for her own storyboarding work on Nora Twomey’s The Breadwinner. Most recently, she worked as Head of Story and Animation Director on the upcoming Netflix feature My Father’s Dragon, collaborating again with Nora Twomey. iGiovanna is currently working on a number of projects in development at Cartoon Saloon, including her directorial debut.

    Nora Twomey

    Nora Twomey is an ACADEMY AWARD® & GOLDEN GLOBE nominated Director. Nora is also Partner & Creative Director at Cartoon Saloon, Ireland.
    In a career spanning over two decades, Nora has worked in a number of capacities on Cartoon Saloon’s creative output. From the early years, directing award winning short films, she went on to co-direct Tomm Moore’s The Secret of Kells while also guiding the development processes on a number of series including Puffin Rock and Dorg Van Dango. Nora was Head of Story on feature Song of the Sea. She directed The Breadwinner, which was nominated for an ACADEMY AWARD® & GOLDEN GLOBE and won several international awards including multiple Annies and the Audience & Jury Awards at Annecy. Nora has just completed directing My Father’s Dragon, a feature film for Netflix about young Elmer Elevator and his adventures, inspired by the beloved children’s book by Ruth Stiles Gannett.
